China province offers rewards for city pollution curbs

The government of Shanxi, China's top coal-producing province, has offered rewards of up to 2 million yuan (US$263,800) for cities that make it off the list of the country's 10 worst polluters, Xinhua news agency said on Monday.

The northwest China province would conduct appraisals annually, the report said.

Nearly two-thirds of Chinese cities suffer from severe air pollution, including 39 cities scattered across Shanxi and Liaoning, a Reuters
report cited official media as saying.
