Chinese floods – ‘Once-in-a-Century’, British floods – worst since 1947

President Hu Jintao described the floods that hit southwestern, central and eastern China in the past week as 'Once-in-a-Century'. The comments, reported by Xinhua, were made on a visit to Chongqing, where 42 people died as a result of the floods. The Environmental News-Wire adds that since mid-June, more than 100 million people in China have been affected by flooding and rain, with an estimated 3.6 million being forced from their homes.

Meanwhile The Times has reported that 350,000 people remain without water in the South of England as a result of severe floods. The UK environment agency was reported as saying that these were the worst floods in the country since 1947.
