Quake causes radioactive leak

An earthquake, measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, has caused the world’s largest nuclear power plant to leak radioactive water into the sea off the west coast of Japan, reports the Environmental News Service.

Tokyo Electric Power Company said 1.5 litres of water containing radioactive materials escaped from a unit at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant on Honshu Island.
Water and gas services for Kashiwazaki City were also suspended due to gas leaks related to the quake.
Environmentalists said the incident highlighted the dangers of nuclear power.
