"A lot of Chinese companies are buying up forest licences and concessions," Reuters cited Heiko Liedeker, executive director of the Forestry Stewardship Council, as saying on Monday. "Some are good, some are minimal, some are clearly not acting legally," he added.
Environmental groups have expressed fears that illegal wood imported into China from forests in the developing world is fuelling the
country’s growing export industry.
Liedeker said the country needed tight controls on entry ports, and must carefully trace the origin of all imported wood.
