Melting ice and snow to hit livelihoods worldwide, says UN

Melting ice and snow caused by global warming will affect hundreds of millions of people around the world, disrupting Asia’s rivers, thawing Arctic ice and raising ocean levels, a UN report said on Monday.

"The fate of the world’s snowy and icy places as a result of climate change should be cause for concern in every ministry, boardroom and living room across the world," Reuters reported Achim Steiner, head of UN Environment Programme, as saying at the launch of the 238-page report "Global Outlook for Ice and Snow", which was written by more than 70 experts.

The report said that about 40% of the world’s population would be affected by retreating glaciers in Asia. Snow and ice in the Himalayas, for instance, help regulate river flows and irrigation from China to India.
