Cambodian elite accused of illegal logging

Cambodia’s forests are being stripped bare by a small group of politicians and businessmen working with the army, a UK-based environment group and former forestry watchdog said on Thursday.

Global Witness, which monitored Cambodia’s forests for its government until it was thrown out of the country in 2006, said logging is in the hands of a "small kleptocratic mafia".

In a report they accuse officials and senators of misappropriating public assets, extortion, tax avoidance, looting the forests and managing an extensive illicit economy.
