UK proposes carbon-footprint labels to aid shoppers

Under a product-labeling plan revealed on Wednesday, British shoppers will be able to tell how much damage their purchases do to the environment. The British government is working with other parties to develop a system for measuring the greenhouse-gas emissions created by the production, transport and disposal of products.

The voluntary labeling scheme — to be developed over the next 18 months — would be similar to the display of calorie and salt content
on food packaging already. Consumers currently have little way of judging the true environmental impact of the goods and services they
purchase.
Environment minister Ian Pearson said of the labeling plan: "This will be fundamental in our efforts to move Britain towards a low-carbon
economy in the decades ahead."
