UK construction sector rises to green challenge

The construction sector, which accounts for close to 10% of the British economy, has become the latest industry to try to ensure an environmentally-sustainable future.
A group of 36 leading companies, including British Land, Hanson, Arup, MacAlpine and Barratt Homes, on Tuesday launched the UK Green Building Council, which aims to improve the sustainability of the "built environment" over the next 10 years.
Peter Rogers, chairman of UK GBC, said they had a great sense of urgency and would have "aggressive and achievable" targets in place for the industry within six months.
"These need to be the three zeros – zero carbon, zero water and zero waste," he said, adding that the changes would have to be driven by the industry, as government legislation would take too long.
