Lakes form after landslides in quake-hit areas

Twenty-one lakes have formed after landslides blocked rivers in Sichuan, but they "do not pose a serious danger at the moment", state media reported the provincial vice-governor as saying. The death toll from the tragic earthquake of May 12 reached 34,073 on Monday.
Expert teams have reached all the lakes to monitor the situation, Li Chengyun reportedly said, adding that various water projects in the province are "basically safe".
At least two water conservancy specialists accompanied by at least 10 People’s Liberation Army officers are monitoring each of the lakes, the report added.
The most dangerous body of water, it said, was about 3.2 kilometres upstream from Beichuan county and measured 9 kilometres long, 200 to 250 metres wide and 40 metres deep at its deepest point.
