China launches biggest oceanic environment survey

China launched its biggest oceanic environment survey on  Saturday, in order to determine the state of its marine ecosystem.
The national programme will last two years and cover 1.02 million km² of sea off China's coasts. Scientists will record data on water depths, waves, water levels, ocean currents, water temperatures and colours, mineral contents and plankton all year round.

The research findings are expected to guide the development of the maritime economy, the tapping of oceanic resources, maritime disaster relief and prevention, and oceanic environmental protection.
