China to invest in medical waste disposal
China is investing around 7 billion yuan (US $875 million) in the construction of three hundred disposal facilities for the 650,000 tons of medical waste that the country produces every year.
It is estimated that this figure will rise to 680,000 tons by 2010, an average of 1,780 tons every day. According to a new report, China’s State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA) and the Development and Reform Commission will invest a total of 14.9 billion yuan (US $1.9 billion) in medical waste disposal in the next three to five years.
