Chris Rapley, head of London’s Science Museum, and Gaia theorist James Lovelock suggest looking at putting huge flotillas of vertical pipes in the tropical seas.

Bringing nutrient-rich deep water up to the oceans’ surface would fertilise algae in the surface waters and encourage them to bloom, boosting ocean take-up of carbon dioxide, the environmentalists say.

"We are taking the very strong line that we are not going to save the planet by the regular approaches like the Kyoto Protocol or renewable energy," a BBC report quoted Lovelock as saying.
