United States president George W Bush is passing legalisation to remove at least 10 major environmental safeguards protecting the country’s national parks, wildlife and rivers, the Guardian reported. Since US laws will go into effect 60 days after approval, these regulations will make it harder for president-elect, Obama to undo them when he takes office in January.

China's crops face soil erosion

A three-year survey found serious erosion is threatening over one-third of China's land, putting the country's crops and water supply at risk, Reuters reported. About 4.5 billion tonnes of soil are blown or washed away annually, prompting the loss of an estimated 200 billion yuan (US$29 billion) in grain production this decade alone.

The glaciers of the Himalayas are retreating at the fastest rate in the world, the Tribune reported scientists as saying. Many glaciers could disappear entirely by 2035, the report added.

China to have fuel tax "very soon"

The head of China’s National Development and Reform Commission's (NDRC) Energy Research Institute announced the country’s long-awaited fuel tax would be implemented "very soon," Reuters reported, quoting China Daily.

英国公司计划投资中国环保


UK firm plans China eco-investment


据《路透社》报道，伦敦的投资公司——气候变化资本集团计划投资50亿元人民币（7.32亿美元），用于中国的环境项目。在未来2-3年，它将在中国开展工业废物管理和清洁技术等方面活动。

Climate Change Capital, a London-based alternative investment manager, plans to invest five billion yuan (US$732 million) in environmental projects in China, Reuters reported. The projects would extend over the next two to three years and include industrial waste management and clean technology.

This 5% reduction indicates that the countries have reached the treaty’s 2012 emissions targets – for now.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, governor of California, ordered preparations for confronting rising sea levels due to global warming, Reuters reported. The most populous American state, California has a Pacific Ocean coastline stretching for more than 1,290 kilometres.
